This 2001 150th Anniversary of the First Canadian Postage Stamp is a delightful item. The set truly sheds light on a fascinating little corner of Canadian history. The RCM produced this set to commemorate the use of the first postage stamp in Canada in 1851. Prior to the use of stamps, anyone receiving a letter had to pay for its posting. The set contains:

• a special 24K gold-plated 3-cent coin
• a unique 47-cent modern stamp
• gold-plated replica of the first 3-cent beaver postage stamp.

The 3-cent coin is a beautiful item with a portion of the original beaver image from the first stamp on the reverse. This image is a fantastic proof image. The obverse features the Queen in a proof finish and the date, 2001. The placement of the date is somewhat unique also. The 47-cent stamp is large and contains a full image of the original 3-cent stamp on it. The gold-plated version of the original stamp is also life-size and beautifully minted.

The coin is sterling silver and minted in proof format. It is covered with 24-karat gold and has a diameter of 21.2 mm and it weighs 5.39 grams. It is encapsulated. The stamp is protected inside a plastic sleeve. The coin, stamp and replica gold-covered stamp are all set very nicely in a large beige flock-lined maroon clam case. This is then protected by a decorative cardboard sleeve with pictures and the RCM logo on it. The set also has its own certificate of authenticity included inside the lid.
